Let's discuss: the Community Voting feature 👍 👎
Cloudhiker is doing good. There are new websites waiting for review almost every day. That's a good thing for the website, as it proves there's a strong community behind it, keen to submit sites they find interesting to share with everybody else. The downside is that it's actually hard to keep up with all the submissions. It was a good move for me personally to limit submissions (at least for non-Premium users) so I don't feel too overwhelmed. But I'm kind of exhausted and it feels like the quality of accepted websites if going down a bit. Another thing is: quality if always subjective. This means that websites I find interesting and meet the rules might be accepted. But that doesn't mean that the community, you people, think that a website is indeed a good fit for Cloudhiker.
The idea about Community Voting
For years now I have the idea in mind: let the community vote about websites, so I can focus on moderation and building actual features. Here's the idea:
- New websites will be reviewed by community members. Once a website reaches a certain threshold of positive votes (10 maybe?), it is automatically accepted.
- If there's a tie, too many negative votes, me or somebody else with moderation rights can do the final vote.
- All votes will be public and transparent to both the voters and the submitters.
- To prevent people creating accounts to vote up their own submissions: voting rights are gained by reputation. This might be account age, number of accepted sites, or maybe premium status.
- Additionally, people have to go through a short "training" to be sure they know what they are voting for and they know the Cloudhiker rules.
You can discuss the topic directly on Discord in this thread.
Additional feature: the Dislike button
Additionally, I am planning on adding a Dislike button. This button indicates that a person does not like a website and can be used as an indicator to find low-quality websites. At the moment, people would have to report sites, which is less accessible. I could imagine that sites with a certain amount of negative votes are pulled out and need to be reviewed again.
Please share your thoughts!
Both features are my ideas how I could lift some weight off of my shoulders and make the whole review process more democratic. It was the plan since the start of Cloudhiker, but I never really had the time to work on it in detail. Now's the time to ask you, the community, about your thoughts. This should be built with you together.
