An Update on the recent Changes to the Submission Rules
Dear community,
quite a few things changed in the past months regarding the submission rules for websites. And I recently learned that those changes should have been made clearer and communicated better to you all. I apologize for that.
So, what has changed?
- Tutorials and generic how-to guides are prohibited. Some people started submitting articles like "how to install x on y", and that's just not a good fit for Cloudhiker.
- A dozen websites have been permanently banned because they disrespect visitors and their privacy. Websites that load 10+ trackers and advertisements do not belong on Cloudhiker. Their behavior is contrary to the values of this platform. Some of the banned websites are Arstechnica, Lifehacker, Mentalfloss, the Guardian, the BBC, and sadly many others.
- Company websites are being reviewed way stricter, as many publish articles whose sole goal is to sell their stuff.
As always, exceptions apply for most rules if the content is of exceptional quality and should definitely be seen by people.
Community Voting
I hope that the review process will become more democratic in the near future. Community voting is already planned and the next big step for the platform. Users voting for websites they want to see, instead of me going through hundreds of sites every week, will give me more time to actually work on features and maintenance, while also making the review process open, clear and free of subjective opinions of a single person. More details will be shared soon. 😬
Questions? Please Ask.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Especially if you are unsure about some recent submissions that were declined. I'm always here to explain why. Of course, nothing is set in stone and false-negatives may apply. I'm just a human too, and the review process has become a lot of work. Mistakes happen, we just have to talk about them.
I wish you all a wonderful new week.
Kevin from Cloudhiker
